I know exactly what you mean about those cabbage soup diets. I'm a mom and after i had my 2 little ones i found it difficult to lose the baby fat. I tried diet after diet and just put the weight back on as soon as i stopped the dieting. Then i thought, why not try a DIY kind of diet? And that was like 4 years ago. Needless to say, i've never looked back. Now me and my family eat the same meals. People ask me how come i never diet, but of course i don't need to now. I just live a much healthier lifestyle. 10 minutes exercise most days before the kids get up and lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Have a look here for more info. http://jaysfitfast.yolasite.com/

What you should to is figure out how many calories your body actually needs to function naturally (we burn 60% of what we eat daily for the body to work) and see how many extra calories you need to have an average day. This way you won't over eat. Also I was watching a special on obesity and the study showed that overeating as little as 25 calories each meal and not burning it up for a whole year can cause obesity (I think you would gain like 100lbs or 75lbs).
So if you really want a long term you should not really try to change much. It will take longer for the lbs to go away but they will eventually. For excersices I would recomend walking whenever possible or drinking water instead of soft drinks. If you have a craving get something healthier (instead of chips eat a granola bar ect.) You should not remove any foods of your diets just cut down on them.
Good luck!
